Hi, could you tell me what the word 'feedback' means? When I looked it up in my dictionary there was a word 'reaction' but in my second dictionary there was such explanation:'advice, criticism about how good or useful something is.' So what does this word really mean? And how can I translate it into Polish? Take care

I found this definition in my dictionary: "advice, criticism etc about how successful or useful something is: How can I provide feedback without making someone angry? Try to give each student some feedback on the task. I zgadzam siê z Mixtur¹ w kwestii polskiego odpowiednika- odzew, reakcja. Pozdrawiam

Mnie kilka razy zdarzylo sie tlumaczyc 'feedback' jako 'informacja zwrotna'. 'Reakcja' to dobre slowo, tylko trzeba pamietac, ze 'reakcja' nie musi byc slowna, to moze byc np. wyraz twarzy. 'Feedback' to 'reakcja wyrazona opinia, slowami'. Pozdrawiam

feedback is a particular reaction to stimuli... it can be positive or negative... it can be spontanious or controlled
examples:
positive: a teacher can give you "positive feedback" to encourage you even if you said something wrong
negative: when a teacher shows you that something is not right...
spontanious: when somebody broke the news to you, your reaction is natural
controlled: somebody told you a joke which wasn't funny and you're laughing coz you like him/her

No mechanical system is perfect. In control systems in a factory, the output is examined to see if it meets the proper specifications. If the product does not meet proper specifications, a correction is made to an earlier point in the process. This is termed feedback control, and I think it may be the origin of the word 'feedback.' The same word has been applied to biological systems to describe the self-correcting nature of natural processes.
Therefore, you can think of feedback as both positive and negative. Positive feedback would be reassurance that a system (or person's behavior) is operating properly and within acceptable parameters. Negative feedback is the effort to correct the system when a flaw is detected.
Note that negative feedback is not the same as the basic word 'criticism.' Criticism implies that the negative points will be mentioned, but a solution may not be offered. In the U.S., the term 'constructive criticism' was used as the term for negative feedback when I was growing up. However, the intrusion of electronics and engineering lingo into the vernacular language is likely why we now more commonly hear the buzzword 'feedback.' It doesn't carry the negative connotations that 'criticism' does.

Oh may god KEN. you even don't know how much I undertand what you mean. My PH.D. thesis was ROBUST CONTROL and all what i did was to create a feedback to reach a correct nominal performance and maintain control system properties despite model uncertainties. If you want to discuss the problem of Loop transfer recovery (LTR) (loop is created by feedback) please continue the topic maybe it helps our lady in some way. Maybe she is going to be (or is) engineer?

I think that "constructive criticism" shouldn't be considered neither as a negative feedback nor as a positive one. If it's constructive then it brings something positive but it's still "criticism" simultaniously, that's why it also has a negative overtone, but, all in all, it's a kind of feedback as well. Constructive criticism influences both sides, it doesn't tip the balance...

To all those replies you've got I can only add that the polish equivalent of "feedback" in the technical and engineering sense that Ken and anglist pointed out is "sprzężenie zwrotne". Of course positive one and negative one is "dodatnie" and "ujemne" respectively.
