In brief: 'Transferred negation'. When verbs like think, believe, sup pose, imagine are used to introduce negative ideas, it is generally the first verb (think, etc.) that is made negative. I don't think you've met my wife. (Not: *I think you haven't met …) from www.cepymearagon.es/cursos/ingles/gramatica4.htmIs it helpful?

Hmmm, This is what M.Swan writes in "Practical English usage": 1. When we introduce negative ideas with THINK, BELIEVE, SUPPOSE,IMAGINE and words with similar meanings, we usually make the first verb (THINK,etc.) negative, not the second. "I don't believe she's at home." (More natural than: "I believe she isn't at home") 2. Transferred negation is not used with HOPE. "I hope it doesn't rain" (NOT "I don't hope it rains") Is it better now? I really hope it is. Andrzej, what do you think?

does it mean there is no difference in meaning in: I don't think she is cute. I think she is not cute. ? However I close this topic but if you can add something more (or maybe Andrzej), you are welcome.

"I think she is not cute" doesn't sound too good. you'd better say "I don't think........." cause it sounds more natural....

I don't think I'd heard of transferred negation before this thread began.
I don't believe that most Americans have ever studied the language in this much detail.
I don't suppose that it would affect our speech since we would still understand the sentence "I suppose that it wouldn't affect our speech."
I don't imagine that it would make a difference to us how the sentences were expressed. However, the transferred negation does move the emphasis to the early part of the sentence and sets the reader up to expect a false (or negative) statement.
